WICHITA - Newman University senior tennis player
Laryssa Ferreira has been named to the 2010-11 CoSIDA/Capital One All-District 7 College Division Women's At-Large First Team, the organization announced Thursday. Ferreira was Newman's only representative on the team, which was voted on by the district's sports information directors.
Ferreira put an exclamation point on her final season with the Jets by being named the Heartland Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year after posting a 30-3 record in singles play, and finishing undefeated in Heartland Conference singles play for the second-straight year. The senior also added a 26-7 record in doubles play, playing primarily with freshman standout
Hillary Hicks. A native of Brasilia, Brazil by way of Wichita State University, Ferreira finished her two-year season at Newman with an overall singles record of 82-19. She will leave Newman as the school's first and only nationally-ranked tennis player.
In addition to her dominance on the tennis court, Ferreira also excelled in the classroom, posting a 3.61 grade point average in Newman's Occupational Therapy Assistant program.
To be eligible for consideration on the 2010-11 CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District 7 team, student-athletes must have achieved sophomore status or higher at their institution, and must have been at their institution for a full year. Additionally, student-athletes must carry a grade point average of 3.30 or higher, and must be a starter or important reserve on their team.
By being voted to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District 7 First Team, Ferreira is now eligible for Academic All-America consideration.
