The Match-Up
About the Jets...
The Jets will take the court as a nationally-ranked team for the first time in school history Thursday when they walk into the Stubblefield Center for a Heartland Conference match-up against the Arkansas-Fort Smith Lady Lions. Newman (17-2, 6-0 Heartland) completed the first half of conference play with a perfect record, including a 64-59 win over UAFS on Jan. 7 inside Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets are led by Seniors Satoria Bell and Tasha Cannon, who have become one of the most dangerous duos in Div. II women's basketball. Bell is averaging 23.6 points and 6.1 boards per game and is the leading point-scorer in Div. II women's basketball, while Cannon averages a double-double at 15.5 points and 10.1 rebounds per game.
The Jets' only losses this season have come on the road, with their last defeat coming in the form of a 71-65 overtime loss at Southwestern Oklahoma State on Dec. 1 in Weatherford, Okla.  The Newman women have out scored their opponents by an average of 14.7 points while giving up just 58.8 points per game.

Scouting Arkansas-Fort Smith...
The Lady Lions run into Thursday's game with an overall record of 12-4 along with a 4-2 mark in Heartland Conference play. UAFS is currently sitting in third position in the Heartland Conference standings and are out to avenga a mid-season loss to the Jets inside Fugate Gymnasium on Jan. 7. The Lady Lions are coming off a 83-69 home win over Central Oklahoma on Jan. 25. Vasha Sanders led the Lady Lions with 17 points while Tracey Parsons and Coby Hill dumped in 13 and 11 points, respectively. UAFS is out-scoring their competition by 7.7 points, and allow just 68.4 points per game.
The Lady Lions are 4-2 on their home floor this season.

Last Time Out...
Newman won its 11th straight game with a 107-84 drubbing of Oklahoma Panhandle State on Jan. 26 in Goodwell, Okla. The Jets scored the first points of the game with an Alina Voronenko layup but fell behind, 12-6 after a three pointer from OPSU's Camille Washington just four minutes into the game. Newman responed and took a 24-22 lead with an Ariella McGhee jumper half way through the first half and used a six-point run to push their lead to 50-39 by the end of the first half.

Newman opened the second half with a Tasha Cannon jumper and looked to be ready to seperate themselves from the Aggies. OPSU tried to rally using a Tomi McDonald layup to cut the lead to 56-48 with 17:32 to play but that would be as close as they would get. The Jets were too much for the Aggies and opened up their largest lead of the game, 91-69 with five minutes remaining. Sumayyah Muhammad capped things off for the Jets, draining a jumper with 0:37 left on the clock and sealing the 107-84 Newman win.

Three Jets notched double-doubles in the contest. Tasha Cannon led the team with 27 points and 10 boards while Satoria Bell  dumped in 22 points and snatched 10 rebounds. Celeste Key was next for the Jets dropping 14 points and bringing down 11 boards. Ariella McGhee was a major factor off the bench going for 11 points and six rebounds against the Aggies. As a team the Jets shot 56.2% (41-73) from the field, out-rebounded the Aggies 56-36 and went 25-33 from the free throw line.

Player to Watch...
Celeste Key- The senior-transfer from Delight, Ark. has been making waves for the Jets, both offensively and defensively. She has posted double-digit scoring totals in two games, and has pulled down five or more rebounds in seven games including two games with double-digit rebounding totals. Key is averaging 4.6 points and
4.4 boards per game and is also shooting 70.8% (17-24) from the free throw line.
