WICHITA – Newman University is set to host the 2014 Heartland Conference Championships this Saturday (Nov. 8) at the Cessna Activity Center. The women's 6k race is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. with the men's 8k race to follow at 10:40 a.m.
The men's cross country team has had a strong season thus far, finishing in the top five in four of its six events.
Jacob Wallace broke the school record, and he has been named the Heartland Conference Male Runner of the Week in back-to-back weeks. A season ago, Wallace was the Heartland Conference Freshman of the Year and an All-Conference Selection.
Nick Martin, a freshman this year, has been named Heartland Conference Male Runner of the Week as well. The Jets last won a Heartland Conference championship in 2012.
Senior
Rubi Torres leads the way for the NU women's cross country team. She has been named the Heartland Conference Female Runner of the Week six times this year. Every time she has raced she has taken the award. She has won two races, and Torres also set the school record this fall. A season ago, Torres finished fifth, and was named All-Heartland.
