LAS VEGAS — Adding to the excitement of two individuals qualifying for nationals, the Newman women's bowling team locked up its own spot in the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships with an impressive showing at the Las Vegas sectional over the weekend.
The Jets, who have steadily improved all season and seem to be peaking at the right time, blew away the competition, finishing their 64 baker games with a total of 12,639 to lock up their second sectional championship and 11th trip to nationals in the 13-year history of the program.
Newman posted the second-best score in each of the two sessions Saturday, and ramped up its play Sunday to put up the best score in both sessions to reach its final tally, which was nearly 350 pins better than second-place Pikeville and the top score at any of the four sectional locations.
The win sealed up a trip to the national tournament, which takes place April 21-23 at Northrock Lanes in Wichita, Kansas. Hailey Williams — who won the individual section title Friday night — and Miranda Hejny will double dip back in Wichita, as they will compete April 19 in the individual competition, and possibly in the individual final April 23.
The Jet men had a solid weekend as well, but finished just outside of a qualifying spot in the top four. They tallied a total of 13,111 over their 64 baker games, which was only 33 pins — or just 0.52 per game — behind Midland, which grabbed the fourth spot and 30 behind fifth-place Arizona State.
