Busy Homecoming Week Coming Up For Newman Athletics

WICHITA, Kan. — The end of February is a busy one for Newman Athletics, with a full week days of action coinciding with Homecoming and Cardinal Newman Week.

MORE INFORMATION ON CARDINAL NEWMAN WEEK AND HERITAGE MONTH

The excitement begins Wednesday night with a pep rally at 9 p.m. at Fugate Gymnasium, followed by free pizza and bubble soccer, presented by the Campus Activities Board. At the pep rally, students will learn the choreography for the special team introductions that will be performed at both Thursday's and Saturday's basketball games. Students can pick up their free homecoming t-shirts at the event.

The action picks up Thursday evening, as the Jets welcome St. Mary's to town for a homecoming basketball doubleheader. Beginning at 5 p.m., Newman Athletics will provide a free dinner in Gorges Atrium, with the women's basketball game starting at 5:30.

At halftime of the women's game, the Jets will be honoring the nearly 200 student-athletes who achieved academic honor roll honors in the Fall 2016 semester.

The men's game, which will start at approximately 7:30, kicks off the final weekend of action at Fugate Gymnasium for Newman coach Mark Potter, who will retire at the conclusion of the 2016-17 season. At halftime of the men's game, the CAB will announce the homecoming king and queen.

In addition, CAB is sponsoring mini games that will be played at breaks throughout both games Thursday, and will raffle off a chance to sit on the VIP couch in the student section.

Saturday's slate packs even more events into a day on the Newman campus. The Jet baseball team hosts Upper Iowa at McCarthy Field, and the Jet softball team plays its home opener against Southwest Baptist, with both doubleheaders starting at 1 p.m.

The Jet basketball teams are also back in action at Fugate Gymnasium for Senior Day festivities, with the women's game starting at 1 p.m. Seniors from the men's and women's basketball, cheer and dance, and bowling teams will be honored immediately following the women's game.

The men's basketball game — Potter's final on Newman's home court — will begin at approximately 3 p.m.
