Jet Women Finish Third At Sectional To Qualify For ITC

DALLAS — Finishing the day on a strong note with the second-highest Day 2 score, the Newman women's bowling team finished third at its sectional qualifier to earn a spot at the national tournament for the third year in a row.

The Jets finished their 64 baker games with a final total of 12,040, averaging 188.1. Wichita State won the sectional with 12,435, and McKendree was second with 12,175.

All eight members of the team played a part, as the Jets held a comfortable cushion throughout most of the day Sunday. The Intercollegiate Team Championships will take place April 19-21 at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Nebraska. Newman is making its 13th nationals appearance in the 15-year history of the program.

Ashton Anderson and Kristen Machacek will be pulling double duty in Lincoln, as they also take part in the Intercollegiate Singles Championship, starting April 17.

The Jet men ran into a hot team on Sunday, bowling well but missing out on qualifying for nationals by one spot. Newman trailed William Penn by just seven pins heading into the final 16 games Sunday, and despite averaging 190.1, William Penn averaged 200.8 to grab the final spot.

Newman turned in a 64-game total of 12,172, averaging 190.2.
