Tigers Oust Jets, 88-57

HAYS, Kan. - Ladessa Nachbor's 11 points wasn't enough to stop a multi-dimensional Fort Hays scoring attack, as the Newman women's basketball team dropped an 88-57 decision to Fort Hays State Wednesday evening inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.

Newman (1-6) kept things close through the first eight minutes of the game, forcing two ties in that span. Tied 12-12 at that point, the Jets took a brief 14-12 lead before Fort Hays State (6-0) put together six-straight points to take an 18-14 lead. The Jets battled back to within one on two occasions over the next five minutes, including a 20-19 deficit with 6:54 remaining in the half, but the Tigers went on an 11-2 run to take their first 10-point lead of the game, 31-21, by the 3:34 mark. Adding insult to injury, FHSU capped the half with a 13-6 run, and took a commanding 43-27 lead into the halftime break.

It didn't get any better from Newman in the second half. Fort Hays State increased their lead to 20, 53-33, by the 15:56 mark, and increased their lead to as much as 31, 69-38, by the 7:59 point, and cruised home from there, on their way to the 88-57 win.

Ladessa Nachbor's 11 points led the Jets offensively, while Jessica Forshee added eight rebounds to lead Newman. Ellen Traylor's two blocks and three steals were team highs in both categories.

Fort Hays State finished with five players in double-figures, and was led by Kayla Klug's 15 points.

As a team, the Jets shot 33.9 percent from the field, but struggled to a 16.7 percent shooting performance from beyond the arc, hitting just two of their 12 attempts. Newman out-shot the Tigers from the charity stripe, hitting 15 of their 18 free throw attempts, while the Tigers made just 18 of their 26 attempts.

Newman will take the next 10 days off for finals week before hosting Gulf South Conference power Ouachita Baptist in a 2 p.m. contest Dec. 12 in Fugate Gymnasium.
