Newman University Athletic Training
Athletic trainers have been recognized by the American Medical Association as an allied health care professional since 1990. Athletic trainers are certified health care professionals who collaborate with physicians and other health care professionals to optimize the participation and activity for patients and clients of all ages and skill levels, including young children, student-athletes, professional athletes, active adults, and military personnel. Athletic trainers provide prevention, examination, treatment, and rehabilitation of acute, subacute, and chronic illnesses and injuries. This commonly includes a wide range of conditions from mild ankle sprains to catastrophic head and neck injuries and mild illnesses to heat stroke.

All Newman University student-athletes must have a complete medical file with the Sports Medicine  Department before athletic participation is permitted. Intercollegiate athletic competition includes any official team practices, voluntary workouts with coaches or other athletes, and any team structured activities.

All student-athletes must completed by a Newman University Team Physician.  A completed medical file will include the required documents below that will be submitted via the Athletic Training System (ATS), as well as a copy of the student-athlete's current health insurance information. The student-athlete will be required to complete the necessary medical information, including emergency contact and insurance carrier information, through the Athletic Training System (ATS). All information is subject to review by the Newman University Sports Medicine Team prior to any type of athletic participation.

All student-athletes must also complete SWAY Baseline Concussion Testing, this is completed through the SWAY Medical app which is available to download through the app store. Student-athletes will be asked to redo their baseline testing if they sustain a concussion at any point throughout the year. All testing is subject to review by the Newman University Sports Medicine Team prior to any type of athletic participation.
 
Per NCAA requirements, all student-athletes must turn in a copy of their Sickle Cell Screening results to the Newman University Sports Medicine staff prior to any type of athletic participation. Results may be emailed to a member of the staff or faxed to 316-295-4579 Attn: Noah Rogers.
