WINFIELD, Kan. - The Newman women's tennis team had little trouble in their second dual match of the season, defeating Southwestern 7-2 Tuesday afternoon in Winfield.
Laryssa Ferreira continued her dual match dominance, teaming up with
Gabriela Balarin to defeat the Moundbuilder tandem of Molly Kearns and Lacey Hibbs, 8-5, then earned a dominating 6-0, 6-0 win over Kearns in singles play.
Ferreira and Balarin's doubles win set up a doubles sweep for the Jets.
Megan Lowe and
Christa Lawlor held on for a 9-8 win over Southwestern's Morgan Hubele and Melissa Roetzer in the No. 2 doubles match, and
Allison Gerber and
Emily Jones completed the sweep with an 8-3 win over Katie McNett and Alyssa Peterson.
The Jets continued to roll in singles play. Balarin picked up a 6-3, 6-3 straight-set win over Hubele in the No. 2 singles match, while Lawlor earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Roetzer in the No. 4 match.
Emily Jones rounded out Newman's singles winners with a 7-5, 6-2 win over McNett in the No. 5 singles match.
Newman's only losses came in the No. 3 and No. 6 matches, respectively.
Megan Lowe dropped a 7-5, 6-3 decision to Hibbs in the No. 3 match, while
Danielle Drouhard fell to Alesia Schneweis, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 6 match.
In an exhibition singles match,
Allison Gerber defeated Alyssa Peterson in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.
With the win, the Jets improve to 1-1 in dual match play. They are back in action Sept. 25 when they travel to Topeka for the women's regional championship.
