HAYS, Kan. - The Newman women's tennis team completed an undefeated fall season Friday afternoon with a 6-3 win over Fort Hays State on the Tigers' home courts in Hays, Kan.

Newman took control of the match early, picking up wins on two of the three doubles courts. Laryssa Ferreira and Hillary Hicks got things started with an 8-2 win over the FHSU tandem of Melissa Skovira and Megan Quinley on the No. 1 court, while Emily Gerber and Ashley Dunham followed with an 8-6 win over FHSU's Laura Johnson and Zoie Young in No. 2 doubles play.

The Tigers' only doubles win came on the No. 3 court, where Amy Guilliams and Brittney Shea defeated Newman's Anna Le and Allison Gerber in an 8-3 decision.

Newman erased any chance of a Tiger comeback in singles play. Ferreira picked up a 6-0, 6-1 straight-set win over Skovira in the No. 1 singles contest, while Hicks defeated Johnson in the No. 2 match, 6-2, 6-1. Emily Gerber and Ashley Dunham followed suit with singles wins of their own to put the dual out of reach for the Tigers. Gerber defeated Quinley in a 6-0, 6-2 decision, while Dunham downed Young in a third-set 6-1, 6-7, 7-5.

Fort Hays State won matches on the No. 5 and No. 6 courts, but it was too little, too late for the Tigers, who had already lost the match. FHSU's Brittney Shea defeated Newman's Katie Klausmyer, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), while Allison Gerber dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to FHSU's Amy Guilliams in the No. 6 singles contest.

With the win, Newman concludes its fall season at an unblemished 5-0. They will return to the court in February when the spring championship season begins.
