LAWTON, Okla. -
Philicia Kelly scored a career-high 30 points as the Newman women's basketball team held off the Cameron Aggies for a 75-70 win Saturday afternoon at Aggie Gym in Lawton, Okla.
Newman (2-0) found itself in a back-and-forth battle early in Saturday's game. Cameron (1-1) forced six ties, and the two teams exchanged the lead three times. The Jets found themselves with a nine-point, 29-20 lead late in the first half, but the Aggies closed the half on a 16-5 run to take a 36-34 lead into halftime.
The Jets returned the favor in the second half. Trailing 46-42 with 13:53 to play, Newman forced six Aggie turnovers, and converted on six of 11 possessions to take a 55-47 lead, and never looked back en route to the 75-50 lead.
Philicia Kelly's 30-point outing led all scorers in the contest. Kelly and
Tasha Cannon each grabbed nine rebounds to lead Newman in the contest. Cannon's nine boards complemented her 11-point outing.
Rhea Codio was Newman's only other double-digit scorer, finishing with 14 points in the win.
With the win, Newman improves to 2-0. They return to action Tuesday with a trip to Pittsburg, Kan., to take on the Pitt State Gorillas. Tip-off at PSU's John Lance Arena is slated for 5:30 p.m.
