Wayne State Notes

WICHITA
- The Newman women's basketball team will host its first nationally-ranked opponent Friday afternoon when the Jets take on No. 17 Wayne State. Tip-time for the contest is slated for 4 p.m. inside Newman's Fugate Gymnasium.

About the Jets...
Newman has bolted to a 5-1 start this season, including the squad's first-ever win over in-state rival Fort Hays, and a win over regional Catholic rival Rockhurst in the championship game of the Catholic Collegiate Invitational. Newman's only loss came in an 83-71 loss to Pittsburg State on Nov. 16 in Pittsburg.

The Jets are led by Philicia Kelly, a 5-9 junior transfer from Labette Community College who is averaging 17.3 points and 7.7 rebounds per game after a 16-point, 10-rebound outing in Newman's 66-52 win over Fort Hays State Tuesday night. Rhea Codio, a transfer guard from the University of Kansas, scores 13.5 points and dishes out 4.5 rebounds per game for the Jets as the team's point guard, while Tasha Cannon can be counted on for 12.7 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in the paint.

As a team, the Jets haveheld their opponents to a .365 collective field goal percentage, and out-rebound opposing teams by a 42.7-32.7 margin.

Scouting #17 Wayne State...
The Wildcats bring a 2-1 record into Friday's contest after splitting a pair of games last weekend at the Colorado Christian/RMAC Classic, where they dropped a 61-60 decision to Colorado Christian before holding off Colorado Mines for a 63-60 win the following day.

Ashley Arlen is Wayne State's leading scorer. The 5-11 junior is averaging 13.3 pionts and 7.3 rebounds for the Wildcats from the forward position this season. Fellow forward Alyssa Fischbach scores 10.7 points per game, while grabbing a team-high 9.7 points per game as a senior.

Wayne State has yet to play a game on its home court in Wayne, Neb., and will not do so until Dec. 10.

Last Time These Two Met...
Wayne State held Newman to just 19 first-half points, then breezed to an 81-42 win over the Jets exactly 363 days ago at Rice Auditorium in Wayne, Neb. Three different Wildcats scored 10-or-more points in the win. Newman shot just .275 (14-51) in the contest, and was out-rebounded 39-31.

The Series....
Wayne State has a 2-1 lead in the all-time series with the Jets. Newman won the first-ever meeting between the two schools with a 76-50 win in the 1997-98 season.
