WICHITA - The Newman women's basketball team will look to avenge Friday's loss to No. 17 Wayne State when they travel to Jefferson City to battle the Lincoln Blue Tigers. Tip-time for the contest is slated for 7 p.m., and will follow the Newman vs. Lincoln men's game inside Lincoln's Jason Gym.
About the Jets...
Newman has bolted to a 5-2 start this season, including the squad's first-ever win over in-state rival Fort Hays, and a win over regional Catholic rival Rockhurst in the championship game of the Catholic Collegiate Invitational. Newman's only losses came in an 83-71 loss to Pittsburg State on Nov. 16 in Pittsburg, and in a 75-64 decision to No. 17 Wayne State Friday afternoon in Wichita.
The Jets are led by
Philicia Kelly, a 5-9 junior transfer from Labette Community College who is averaging 16.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per game after a 14-point, five-rebound outing in Newman's 75-64 loss to No. 17 Wayne State Tuesday night.
Rhea Codio, a transfer guard from the University of Kansas, scores 12.9 points and dishes out 4.5 rebounds per game for the Jets as the team's point guard, while
Tasha Cannon can be counted on for 12.9 points and 8.4 rebounds per game in the paint. Cannon posted her second double-double of the season Friday night with 14 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
As a team, the Jets haveheld their opponents to a .373 collective field goal percentage, and out-rebound opposing teams by a 41.9-34.3 margin.
Scouting Lincoln...
The Wildcats bring a 1-2 record into Saturday's contest, but are coming off a 62-44 loss to Illinois-Springfield a week ago in Jefferson City. After opening with a 112-102 double-overtime exhibition win over Livin' the Dream, Lincoln opened its season with a 59-57 overtime win over Rockhurst, then dropped a 78-63 decision to Missouri-St. Louis in the final game of the Lincoln Classic. .
Vivian Essuon has emerged as Lincoln's leading scorer this season. The 6-1 junior college transfer forward is averaging a 13.7-point, 11.0 rebound double-double this season. Cherakie Barrett, a 5-7 senior guard, is right on her heels, averaging 13.5 points per game this season. The Lincoln roster consists of just nine players, eight of which have seen playing time this season.
Lincoln has yet to play a game away from its home court in Jefferson City, Mo., and will not do so until Dec. 1.
