Jets Fall to No. 17 Wayne State, 75-64

WICHITA - Tasha Cannon and Philicia Kelly scored 14 points each, but a second-half rally led No. 17 Wayne State past the Newman women's basketball team Friday evening inside Newman's Fugate Gymnasium. Cannon added a career-high14 rebounds for her second double-double of the season in the loss.

Newman (5-2) jumped out to an early 12-6 lead in the first four minutes of the game when Rhea Codio drained a three-pointer with 16:17 to play. The Jets extended that lead to 18-11 after a Celeste Key jumper at the 10:58 mark, but Wayne State (3-1) countered with a 7-1 spurt to pull within one, 19-18, less than three minutes later. The two squads exchanged buckets for the next four minutes until Bobbi Coleman drained a trey at the 4:29 mark to give Newman a 26-22 lead, and sparked a 5-2 run capped by another Coleman trey that pushed Newman's lead to 31-24 with 3:32 remaining in the opening half, but the Wildcats pulled back to within two, 33-31 less than 90 seconds later. At halftime, Newman held a 36-33 advantage.

Foul trouble affected head coach Jaime Green's strategy to start the second half. Starting guard Philicia Kelly and Bobbi Coleman, who came off the bench and scored 12 first-half points, had each been tagged with three fouls in the first 20 minutes of play.

A lay-up by Ashley Arlen on Wayne State's second possession of the second half gave the visiting Wildcats their first lead of the contest. Newman regained the lead at 42-41 on a Kelly lay-up with the 17:03 mark, but WSC responded with a 9-0 run to take a 50-42 lead after a Renee Wood three-pointer with 15:02 to play. From that point, the Wildcats never looked back. Wayne State earned its first 10-point lead at the 10:28 mark when another Arlen lay-up gave the Wildcats a 57-47 cushion. Newman pulled back to within seven, 69-62, late in the game, but WSC closed the game on a 6-2 run on their way to the 75-64 win.

Tasha Cannon and Philicia Kelly each scored 14 points to lead the Jets. Cannon added a career-high 14 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Bobbi Coleman was Newman's only other double-digit scorer, finishing with 12 points in the contest.

Wayne State's Mara Hjelle led all scorers with 22 points, and added 10 rebounds for a double-double of her own.

With the loss, the Jets fall to 5-2 on the season. They will return to action Saturday, traveling to Jefferson City, Mo., for a 7 p.m. contest with the Lincoln Blue Tigers.
