WICHITA - The Newman men's tennis team made the trip to Wichita's east side Tuesday afternoon, taking on NCAA Div. I foe Wichita State at Genesis Health Club. The Jets held their own in a handful of matches, before eventually being swept by the Shockers.

One of the most hotly-contested matches of the afternoon took place right off the bat, as Newman's Jimmy Dunseith and Chris King took the court opposite the WSU tandem of Vlad Marinescu and Sven Kasper. Dunseith and King took the first point from their Shocker counterparts, and gave the top WSU doubles team all they could handle, but fell two points short in an 8-6 decision. Wichita State simply had too much talent in the remaining doubles matches, and earned the doubles point with a three-match sweep.

While Wichita State controlled the singles competition, Newman head coach Josh Rupp got a glimpse of what to expect from his squad when they take the court this season. One bright spot came in the No. 3 match, where Juraj Surovy dropped the closest match of the dual, falling to WSU's Adrian Chermaci 7-5, 6-2. One court down, Kevin Klein rallied from a 6-0 loss in the first match, and dropped his second game by just two points, falling 6-4 to Valentin Mihai.

The Jets will continue their spring campaign Friday, hosting Barton County Community College in a 1 p.m. match at Genesis Health Club. The Newman women will also host BCCC, taking on the Cougars in a noon contest to be played at Riverside Tennis Center.
