PLANO, Texas - The Newman Women's tennis team came up short in both matches of the Collin College Super Six tournament Saturday in Plano, Texas. The Jets dropped a deceivingly-lopsided 9-0 contest to Midwestern State, then concluded their tournament with a 5-4 loss to Seminole State.

Midwestern State 9, Newman 0
Newman challenged Lone Star Conference power Midwestern State on two doubles courts and two singles courts, but ultimately came up empty in all nine matches Saturday.

Laryssa Ferreira battled in her singles match against MSU's Alex Odell-Michels, but fell just short in a three set, 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 decision. In her doubles match with teammate Emily Gerber, they competed back and forth but losing to Mustang's tandem of ALex Odell-Michele and Lindsey Holcomb 8-5.

Gerber also competed in her singles match, but came up on the short end of a 6-4, 6-4 decision to MSU's Ashley Huse.

The Jets put up another fight in the No. 3 doubles match, as the Jets pair of Megan Lowe and Danielle Drouhard battled the Mustang tandem of Ashley Huse and Holly Gunderson. This double contest was a back and forth contest, but in the end the Jets fell 8-5.


Seminole State 5 Newman 4
In the second and final contest of the Collin College Super Six tournament, the Jets battled in a back and forth contest between Seminole State College, but ultimetly lost the dual 5-4.

Laryssa Ferreira bounced back after losing her first single match of the tournament, as she dominated SSC's Natalia Khakimova 6-1, 6-2. Her domination didnt stop there, as she teamed with teammate Emily Gerber to win over the Trojan duo of Diana Luzano and Natalia Khakimova by the score of 8-4.

The Jets continued to play well in doubles play, as Newman's Gabby Balarin and Christa Lawlor had an impressive victory over SSC's Jade Cunningham and Morgan Chissoe 8-3.

In what was agraubly the dual's best match, Emily Jones sqeaked out one against Trojan's Diana Lozano in 3 sets, 6-3, 4-6, 10-4.

Because of weather, Newman only had two dual contest in the tournament.

After the two close losses, the Jets fall to 5-3 in dual match play. They are back in action March 5 when they travel to Topeka to play Northwest Missouri State and Emporia State in matches that will be played at Washburn University.
