AUSTIN, Texas -
Laryssa Ferreira earned a straight-set win over one of the best freshmen collegiate tennis players in the nation, but couldn't get any help from the bottom of her line-up as the Jets dropped an 8-1 decision to St. Edward's Saturday afternoon in Austin, Texas.
Ferreira's win came at the No. 1 singles position, where she knocked off Paige Rachel, the Hilltoppers' offering at the No. 1 position. Out for revenge after being knocked out of last fall's regional tournament by a Hilltopper, Ferreira got what she was looking for in a 6-2, 6-2 win over Rachel.
That was where the good news stopped for the Jets, as the Hilltoppers proved their worth as a perennial Heartland Conference tennis power. St. Edward's swept the remaining matches en route to the 8-1 win.
The loss dropps the Jets to 6-7 overall this season, and 1-1 in Heartland Conference play. Newman returns to action Sunday, driving deeper into Texas to take on St. Mary's Sunday afternoon in San Antonio.
