AUSTIN, Texas - The Newman men's tennis team received a less-than-warm welcome to Heartland Conference play, dropping a 7-0 match to St. Edward's Saturday afternoon at the Emmett Strohmeyer Varsity Courts in Austin, Texas.
The Jets kept things interesting in doubles play. Newman's No. 2 duo of
Juraj Surovy and
Kevin Klein gave the SEU tandem of Ryan Wiggins and Justin Raiti all they wanted, but came up two games short in an 8-6 loss. Newman's No. 1 doubles team of
Jimmy Dunseith and
Chris King were also competitive, but came up on the short end of an 8-5 decision.
Newman proved to be no match for St. Edward's in singles play, winning a combined total of 10 games in the loss.
The Jets will be back at it Sunday, traveling to San Antonio, Texas, to take on St. Mary's in another Heartland Conference match. First serve is slated for 11 a.m.
