WICHITA - The Newman women's tennis team improved to 3-0 Wednesday, earning a 9-0 sweep of former NAIA arch-rival Friends University at the FU Tennis Courts. Senior
Laryssa Ferreira completed an individual sweep of her own, winning her doubles and singles matches without losing a single game.
The doubles competition set the tone for the rest of Wednesday's dual. Ferreira teamed with
Hillary Hicks to pick up an 8-0 win over the Friends tandem of Elly Johnson and Kylie Combs on the No. 1 doubles court.
Emily Gerber and
Christa Lawlor followed with an 8-1 win over Friends' Stephanie Curtis and Sara McVay in the No. 2 doubles match, while
Ashley Dunham and
Emily Jones completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win over FU's Kassie Welch and Sam Hutson on the No. 3 court.
Newman used its momentum from doubles play to carry the Jets through singles play.
Laryssa Ferreira cruised to a straight-set, 6-0, 6-0 win over Elly Johnson in the No. 1 singles match, while
Hillary Hicks followed suit with a 6-0, 6-1 win on the No. 2 singles court.
Emily Gerber continued the sweep, defeating Stephanie Curtis in a 6-1, 6-0 decision on the No. 3 court, and
Christa Lawlor picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win over Kylie Combs in the No. 4 singles match.
Emily Jones and
Ashley Dunham completed the Newman sweep on their respective courts. Jones downed Sara McVay in a 6-2, 6-0 win on the No. 5 court, while Dunham swept Kassie Welch to complete the Newman sweep.
With the win, the Jets move to 3-0 on the season. They will return to action Friday, traveling to Abilene, Texas for the ITA Women's South Central Regional Championship.
