Cannon's Double-Double Leads Jets Past Mustangs

Box Score WICHITA - The Newman women's basketball team defeated Midwestern State for the second time in as many seasons Tuesday night, handing the Mustangs a 74-65 loss.  Seniors Satoria Bell and Tasha Cannon contributed more than half of the Jets' points on offense, with Cannon posting a 23-point, 16-rebound double-double on the night.

Midwestern State's ferocious defense forced several turnovers and allowed the the Mustangs to jump out to a quick 5-0 lead within the first two minutes of play.  Sophomore Sam Soyez knocked down a two-point basket at the 18:06 mark to give the Jets their first points of the game.  The teams traded shots until Anna Sonka drained one from beyond the arc to put the Jets in front 8-7 six minutes into the game. The lead was one the Jets would never relinquish. MSU continued to pressure Newman on defense, refusing to let the Jets pull too far ahead.  Satoria Bell scored back-to-back buckets within a span of six seconds to put the Jets up 29-24 with 1:19 remaining.  Anna Sonka sank her second three-pointer at the 21-second mark to give the Jets their largest lead of the first half, 34-26.

Newman's offense came out firing on all cylinders in the second half.  Tasha Cannon drained six points in the first two minutes of the half to spark the Jets to a 40-27 advantage.  For the next 10 minutes of play, the Jets dominated the floor.  Newman took its largest lead of the game, a 20-point tally, when baskets from Cannon, Soyez, and Bell gave the Jets a 65-45 lead with 5:26 remaining in the half.  The Mustangs still showed that they had some fight left in them, however, and scored nine unanswered points over a two minute stretch to cut the Jets' lead to 65-54.  Junior Kianna Flannagan stopped the bleeding there, knocking a two pointer down at the 2:29 mark to get Newman back on the offensive.  Tasha Cannon ended the second half the same way she started it, scoring six points in the final two-minute stretch to keep the Jets comfortably ahead. Cannon knocked down two free throws with six seconds remaining to produce the final 74-65 score.

Cannon led all scorers with 23 points on the night.  She also notched her first double-double of the season, tallying 16 rebounds to go along with a 9-for-12 effort from the field.  Satoria Bell was the  next highest scorer, with 20 points.  Bell also led the Jets with four steals in the game.  Anna Sonka was the only Newman player to score from beyond the arc, shooting two three-pointers to give her six points on the night.

Savannah Carver led Midwestern State with 18 points in the game.

The Jets improve to 2-0 on the season with the win.  Their next game will be Friday, as they travel to Kansas City, Mo., to take on the Regis Rangers in the opening game of the Catholic School Invitational.
