Tasha Cannon posted her second double-double of the season, and helped lead the Newman women's basketball team to a 64-41 win over NAIA power Avila Saturday afternoon at Mason-Halpin Field House in Kansas City, Mo. Cannon scored 13 points and added 13 rebounds in the win.
-Newman (4-0) jumped out to an early 5-2 lead after an
Anna Sonka trey with 17:32 to play, and never looked back. After leading by five in the first four minutes of the contest, the Jets let their lead slip to two after a Brittany Townsend triple that brought the Eagles to within 9-7, but a
Tasha Cannon lay-up sparked a 10-1 Newman run, capped by an
Ariella McGhee lay-up gave the Jets an 11-point, 19-8 lead with 9:14 to play in the first half.
-Newman led by as many as 15 in the first half after a
Satoria Bell jumper gave the Jets a 28-13 lead with 5:46 remaining, but an Avila lay-up on the Eagles' ensuing possession sparked a 10-0 run, and cut the Newman lead to five, 28-23, in just three minutes. But the Jets got the last laugh.
Kianna Flannagan's jumper with 2:32 to play in the period sparked a 6-1 spurt over the final 2:47 of the half, and gave Newman a 34-24 lead at halftime.
-It took better than three minutes for either team to score in the final period, and Avila was the one that broke the ice. Courtney Gimlin's trey pulled the Eagles to within seven, 34-27, at the 16:56 mark, but Cannon responded two possessions later with an old-fashioned three-point play that pushed Newman's lead back to 10, 37-27 with 16:30 to play.
-Gimlin drained another triple for Avila at the 15:26 mark, and pulled the Eagles to within seven, 37-30, once again. This time, they were able to keep the margin under double-digits for an extended period of time. Gimlin took the short route with a two-point jumper to pull the Eagles to within five, 37-32, with 14:44 to play. Newman lever led by more than nine until the 9:13 mark when Cannon's lay-up sparked a 16-2 run over the final nine minutes of the game that turned a 48-37 lead into a 64-39 lead inside of the final minute. Avila notched a pair of free throws in the final 15 seconds of play to set up the final 64-41 margin.

Satoria Bell used an 8-for-15 effort from the field to record a game-high 18 points. Bell finished under 20 points for the first time in the 2011-12 season.

Tasha Cannon missed just six shots, scoring 13 points behind a 5-for-11 effort from the field. The senior forward added 13 rebounds (eight offensive, five defensive) for her second double-double of the season.
-The Jets shot a perfect nine-for-nine from the free throw line.
-Newman out-rebounded Avila 40-23, and forced 23 turnovers by the Eagles.
-As a team, the Jets shot 45.6 percent (26-57) from the field, and 25 percent (3-12) from beyond the arc.
With the win, the Jets improve to 4-0 on the season. They will face their first nationally-ranked opponent of the season Tuesday, traveling to Wayne, Neb., to take on the ninth-ranked Wayne State Wildcats in a 6 p.m. contest.
