Box Score WICHITA -
Satoria Bell scored 28 points and
Tasha Cannon recorded her third-straight double-double as the Newman women's basketball team downed William Jewell, 61-49, Saturday afternoon inside Fugate Gymnasium. Bell and Cannon combined for 38 points and 18 rebounds in the contest.
Defense owned the court Saturday afternoon, as Newman engaged in a back-and-forth battle with the Cardinals for the better part of 40 minutes. The Cardinals put the Newman offense to the test, limiting the Jets to just 26 points in the first half. The Jets were relentless, however, and overpowered William Jewell down the stretch for the 61-49 win. The Cardinals jumped ahead early, scoring a three pointer off the opening tip to take an early 3-0 advantage. Back-to-back baskets from Cannon and Bell gave the Jets their first lead of the game, 4-3, two minutes in. After several lead changes, a layup at the 14:46 mark by senior
Alina Voronenko gave Newman a 10-9 lead, one they would not relinquish in the first half.
Anna Sonka drained the only three pointer of the day for the Jets at the 9:54 mark. Sonka's three sparked a seven-point rally which widened the Newman lead to 23-12, and gave the Jets their largest lead of the first half. The Cardinals continued to pressure the Jets with their defense, though, limiting Newman to just three points in the final five minutes of the half. William Jewell's stifling defense allowed them to chip away at the Jet lead, as a two pointer by Cassy Nicolay with 22 seconds remaining tied the score at 26-26 going into halftime.
The second half began much the same way as the first half went, with both teams trading baskets over the first few minutes and keeping the game tight. The Cardinals seized the lead momentarily at the 13:07 mark, when a two-pointer from Chelsea Meeks put them ahead 35-34. But that lead lasted for just 10 seconds, as senior
Celeste Key sank a two-point basket to put the Jets back in front. This time the Jets held the lead for good. From then on, the Jets' defense controlled the floor, holding William Jewell scoreless for a six minute period at one point. Newman continued to struggle to generate consistent offense, though, until the final minute of the game. Newman led 52-43 at the 1:08 mark, when free throws from
Ellen Traylor,
Tasha Cannon, and
Satoria Bell added nine points to the Jet total in the final seconds of the game, and led to the 61-49 final margin.
Bell's 28 points marked her eighth game with 20 or more points this season. She also added three steals on the day. Sophomore
Sam Soyez had four assists in the game. The Jets outrebounded the Cardinals 41-31, while
Tasha Cannon was the only player in the game to tally double digits in rebounds.
Holly Switzer led William Jewell with 16 points.
The Jets rise to 8-2 on the season with the victory, still undefeated when playing at home. They will try to extend their home winning streak on Saturday, December 17, as they take on the Bulldogs of McPherson College. Tip-time is slated for 2 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium.
