WICHITA- The Newman women's basketball team used various runs to up-end NAIA foe McPherson on Saturday inside Fugate Gymnasium. Satoria Bell led Newman with 25 points, and was one four Jets to finish the game in double-figures.
The Jets came out firing right from the tip, starting the game on a 9-0 run, four of which came from Samantha Soyez. McPherson climbed back into the game at the 14:26 mark, forcing a 14-14 tie, after a pair of Taylor Schrag free-throws. A Satoria Bell free-throw helped ignite a 12-4 run, and gave Jets a 26-18 lead at the 9:22 mark of the period. Tough defense and help from Alina Voronenko and Soyez contributed to a 47-27 halftime lead. Bell lead Newman at the half, pouring in 12 first-half points. Four Jets scored seven or more points in the period, as Newman shot 48.6 percent (18-37) from the field, and 33.3 percent (3-9) from beyond the arc.
Newman turned up the heat in the second half, holding the Bulldogs to just 10 second half points. The Jets took advantage of a 37-4 run that covered nearly 14 minutes, before McPherson finally converted a three-pointer with 5:48 remaining in the game, but by that time the Jets had built an insurmountable 87-34 lead. Eight Jets scored points during the run. Newman shot 58.1 percent (18-31) in the second-half, while shooting 40 percent (4-10) from three-point land. The Jets held the Bulldogs to just 16.7 percent (4-24) from the field, and 10 percent (1-10) on three-point attempts.
-Satoria Bell's 25 point output marks the 11th time this season that she has scored in double-figures. Tasha Cannon's 18-point, 10-rebound night was her sixth double-double of the year.
-Alina Voronenko and Ellen Traylor set career-highs in scoring, pouring in 11 and six points respectively. Samantha Soyez's 11 point outing set a season high.
-Newman set season-highs in field-goals made (36), largest lead (59), largest margin of victory (59), rebounds (46), and assists (26). With the win, the Jets improved to 9-2 on their 2011-12 campaign. Newman will return to action on Dec. 29, when they travel to Commerce, Texas to take on Texas A&M Commerce. Tip-time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
