Women's Basketball Hosts William Jewell on Saturday

WICHITA - The Newman women's basketball team will be ready to defend its undefeated home record when William Jewell comes to town Saturday at 2 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets will look for their second straight victory after defeating East Central 79-63 at home on Dec. 3.

The 2011-12 Jets...
William Jewell will have a tough task at hand when they visit Wichita on Saturday. The Jets are leading the Heartland Conference in scoring defense, holding opponents to 58.6 points per contest. Newman is also leading the conference in scoring margin, outscoring opponents by 9.7 points per game. The Jets have had huge performances thus far from senior guard Satoria Bell, who went for 32 points in Saturday's win against East Central. Bell is leading the team in scoring for the season, averaging 23.4 points per contest, and has been named the Heartland Conference Player of the Week three times.

Tasha Cannon joins Bell in double-figures. Cannon averages 14.3 points per game and leads the Jets in rebouding with 10.6 boards per contest. She is the only other player in the conference besides Bell to earn Heartland Conference Player of the Week honors.

Defensively Newman is holding its opposition to just 37.9 percent from the field and 27.2 percent from beyond the arc.

For the season Newman is shooting 43.7 percent from the field, and 29.9 percent from long range. The Jets convert 76.3 percent (122-160) of their free throws, and out-rebound their opponents by a 5.5 margin.

Last Time Out...
The Jets climbed to 7-2 on the season after a 79-63 win over East Central on Dec. 3 in Wichita on Dec. 3.  Newman shot 45.5 percent from the field and 77.8 percent (14-18) from the free throw line.

After leading 40-35 at halftime the Jets opened the second half with an 8-0 run and pulled ahead by as many as 23 before closing the door on the Tigers.

Senior guard Satoria Bell led the Jets' offense with 32 points, while adding four rebounds and three steals in the game. Tasha Cannon booked her fourth double-double of the season, netting 16 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Ariella McGhee came off the bench for Newman contributing 10 points, five rebounds and two steals.

Scouting William Jewell...
William Jewell comes into Saturday's match-up with a record of 5-1. The Cardinals are coming off of a 63-48 victory over Illinois-Springfield. Holly Switzer led William Jewell offensively, scoring 19 points and pullling down four rebounds. Cassy Nicolay joined Switzer in double-figures adding 14 points and nine rebounds. The Cardinals' only loss came at home against conference foe Quincy University, 77-61.

William Jewell is led by Cassy Nicolay, who is averaging 12.7 points per game. Nicolay is also leading the team in rebounds, averaging seven boards per contest. Chelsea Meeks is the Cardinals second-leading-scorer, contributing 11 points per game.

As a team the Cardinals are shooting 44.5 percent from the field and 29.9 percent from beyond the arc. William Jewell is making the most of its opportunities at the line, making 74.3 percent of their free throws.

Saturday's meeting marks the first time that Newman has faced William Jewell on the hardwood.
