WICHITA - The Newman women's tennis team dropped its second dual match of the 2011 spring season, falling in a 7-2 decision to Rockhurst Saturday evening at Genesis Health Club's west location in Wichita.

While the Hawks may have won the team portion of the event, Newman stole the show in the No. 1 singles match, which featured two nationally-ranked players. Rockhurst's Maureen Rielley entered the match ranked No. 30 in the nation, while Newman's Laryssa Ferreira brought a No. 44 ranking into the contest. Ferreira opened the contest with a 6-2 first-set win, but Rielley countered with a 7-6 win in the second set after losing a 7-5 tie-breaker, which forced a super-tie-breaker to decide the match. From that point forward, the match belonged to Ferreira. The Newman senior ran away with the third-set super-tie-breaker for a 10-3 win to secure the match.

Newman's only other win came in the No. 5 match, where Christa Lawlor rallied to defeat Rockhurst's Christine Schartz, 1-6, 6-3, 11-9.

Rockhurst used a double's sweep, and wins in the No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 matches to earn the 7-2 dual win.

With the loss, the Jets fall to 5-2 on the season. They will return to action Tuesday, hosting Baker in a 1 p.m. contest.
