ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Newman women's tennis team swept its competition to claim championship honors at the Car City Classic last weekend in St. Joseph, Mo. Newman defeated Lincoln, Morningside College, and Missouri Western. Laryssa Ferreira and Hillary Hicks had a perfect weekend in singles and doubles competition.

Newman 6, Lincoln 1
The Jets only loss of the classic came in the No. 3 match against Lincoln. Jessica Brown gave Lincoln's Alina Katrevich a tough match with a 7-5 first set loss and a 6-4 second set loss. Newman swept the rest of the matches against the Blue Tigers. Laryssa Ferreira took the No. 1 match with 6-0 and 6-1 set wins. For the No. 2 match Hillary Hicks went 6-3 and 6-0. Together Ferreira and Hicks beat Lincoln in the doubles competition, 8-4.

Newman 9, Morningside 0
Morningside could not handle Newman's shots as the Jets swept the Mustangs in both singles and doubles play. Ferreira continued her winning ways with 6-0, 6-0 scores in the No. 1 match. Hicks defeated Morningside's Amanda Przymus in straight-sets,  6-2, 6-2. Newman did not give up a single point in all the doubles matches. All three doubles matches belonged to the Jets by identical 8-0 scores.

Newman 9, Missouri Western 0
The Jets remained hot against Missouri Western sweeping all the singles and doubles competitions. In the No. 1 match Ferreira defeated Missouri Western's Nicole Kerr 6-1, 6-0; while Hicks won the No. 2 match, 6-2, 6-2. The No. 1 doubles competition concluded the perfect weekend for Ferreira and Hicks, 8-2.

After the successful weekend, the Jets improved to an overall 9-2 record. Newman will return to action March 1 against Bethel for a home match.
