WICHITA – The Newman women's tennis team defeated Bethel 7-2 Tuesday afternoon in a dual match at Genesis Health Club's west location in Wichita. Laryssa Ferreira, Hillary Hicks, and Emily Gerber's winning performances helped the Jets cruise past the Threshers.

The doubles competition started with Newman's Ferreira/Hicks taking on Bethel's Katie Malotte and Allison Kaster. Ferreira/Hicks did not give Malotte/Kaster a chance with an 8-1 decision. The Jets next victory in doubles play was the No. 3 match. Allison Gerber and Emily Gerber rallied for an 8-4 win against Steph Shrogen and Becky Johnson.

Newman came close to a singles sweep, but a loss in the No. 3 match held the Jets back. Laryssa Ferreira prevailed in the No. 1 match against Katie Malotte with a 6-1, 6-0 score. In the No. 2 match Bethel's Miranda Weaver could not handle Hilary Hicks' versatility resulting in a 6-0, 6-0 victory for Hicks. After the No. 3 match loss, Newman won the No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 matches.

Newman's seven wins topped Bethel's No. 2 doubles competition match and No. 3 singles victories.

The dual match win brings Newman to a 10-2 record. The Jets will return to action on March 4 against Wasburn in Topeka.
