WICHITA - The Newman women's tennis team took advantage of calm winds and mild temperatures, and picked up a 9-0 sweep of Tabor College Tuesday afternoon at Riverside Tennis Center.
Newman (10-5) started the sweep by winning all three doubles competitions. The Jets' No. 2 duo of
Emily Gerber and
Jessica Brown was the first doubles team off the court, picking up an 8-1 decicion over the Tabor (2-4) tandem of Jamie Williams and Brynne Mitchell. Newman's No. 1 pair of
Laryssa Ferreira and
Hillary Hicks followed with an 8-2 win over Tabor's Amanda Faber and Amanda Gayer.
Christa Lawlor and
Allison Gerber completed the sweep with an 8-5 win over TC's Greta Wiebe and Katie Chlumsky in the No. 3 match.
The Jets continued their dominance in singles play. Ferreira needed less than 30 minutes to defeat Gayer, 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 match. Hicks followed shortly after with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Faber. The Bluejays put up their best fight in the No. 3 match, where Newman's
Jessica Brown dropped her first set, but rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 win over Williams. But from that point on, the Jets surrendered a total of six games to the Bluejays en route to the 9-0 sweep.
With the win, the Jets improve to 10-5 on the season. They will return to action Sunday with a trip to Austin, Texas to take on the St. Edward's Hilltoppers. First serve is slated for 10 a.m.
