DALLAS, Texas - The most successful season in Newman women's tennis history came to an end with a 5-0 loss to Dallas Baptist in the opening round of the Heartland Conference Women's Tennis Championship tournament, which opened Thursday in Dallas, Texas.
Rainy conditions forced the tournament to be moved indoors, and due to limited court space, the matches were concluded as soon as one team picked up it's fifth win.
Dallas Baptist took a commanding lead in doubles play, taking all three courts from the Jets. Newman's No. 1 tandem of
Laryssa Ferreira and
Hillary Hicks dropped an 8-5 decision to DBU's top duo of Natalie Gennisen and Hannah Innes.
Jessica Brown and
Emily Gerber followed with an 8-0 loss to DBU's Lisa Olian and Natalie Holmes on the No. 2 court, while the Patriots completed the doubles sweep when Leah Rutt and Laura Atkins knocked off
Christa Lawlor and
Ashley Dunham with an 8-6 win.
Singles play didn't go much better for the Jets, who were able to complete just two matches before the Patriots claimed the win. Brown dropped a 6-1, 6-1 straight-set decision to Rutt, while Innes won the match for the Patriots with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Dunham.
With the loss, the Jets finish with a 15-12 record on the season.
