WINFIELD, Kan - The Newman women's tennis team dominated its first dual match of the season, sweeping Southwestern 9-0 Wednesday afternoon in Winfield, Kan.. The Jets claimed straight-set shut-outs in each of their top two singles matches.

The Jets claimed an early 3-0 lead in the match after singles play where Kirstie Symon and freshman Courtney Dold beat Southwestern's Melissa Roetzer and Abby Gengler, 8-0. Newman continued its dominant doubles play when sophomore Hillary Hicks and junior Jessica Brown beat the Moundbuilders' Sara Peck and Kelsey Smith, 8-1 while Jets senior Emily Gerber and sophomore Anna Le defeated SC's Katie McNatt and Tyler Harrell by the same score to secure the doubles sweep.

In the singles play Newman continued the sweep beginning with a 6-0, 6-0 victory by Symon over Roetzer. Hicks matched Symon with a 6-0, 6-0 victory of her own against Smith. Dold defeated Peck, 6-2, 6-2 to give the Jets a 6-0 lead in the dual. Newman's Brown beat Harrell 6-1, 6-2 while senior Gerber was victorious over SC' s Gengler 6-2, 6-1. In the final singles match Le came from a set down to beat McNatt 1-6, 6-3, 10-3 to seal the team sweep 9-0.

With the win the Jets opened the dual season at 1-0. They will return to action Friday at 3:30 traveling to Hays, Kan. to take on Fort Hays State.
