HAYS, Kan. - The Newman women's tennis team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 5-4 dual match victory over Fort Hays State last week in Hays Kan..

Newman sophomore Kirstie Symon and freshman Courtney Dold began doubles play with a 8-4 victory over Fort Hays State's Brittney Ricci and Caitlyn Wark. FHSU's Melissa Skovira and Camille Caron-Bedard responded in the next match beating Newman's Jessica Brown and Hillary Hicks 8-2. Senior Emily Gerber and sophomore Anna Le took the third doubles match for the Jets with a 8-4 win against FHSU's Megan Quinley and Brianna Watkins to give Newman a 2-1 lead going into singles play.

In singles play Newman's Symon started things off with a 6-3, 6-3 win against FHSU's Ricci while teammate Hicks claimed victory over the Tigers' Caron-Bedard 6-4, 1-6, 10-7 to put Newman ahead 4-1 in the dual. FHSU won the next two matches when Wark defeated Dold 6-2, 6-1 and Skovira knocked off Brown 6-1, 6-2, narrowing Newman's lead to 4-3 in the dual. Gerber triumphed over FHSU's Laura Johnson 6-1, 6-2 to clinch the dual match win for the Jets but FHSU won the last match when Quinley defeated Katie Klausmeyer 6-4, 4-6, 6-10.

With the win the Jets improve to 2-0 on the season.  They will return to action Tuesday in Wichita, Kan. against Friends.
