Jets Tame Rattlers for Eight-Straight Win, 66-59

Box Score WICHITA - Satoria Bell scored 29 points, and led the Newman women's basketball team to its eighth-straight win with a 66-59 decision over St. Mary's Saturday afternoon inside Fugate Gymnasium. Tasha Cannon added a 17-point, 17-rebound double-double in the win.

It took a while for Saturday's game to develop a rhythm. St. Mary's (9-11, 3-1 Heartland) took an early 8-2 lead, but needed better than four minutes to do it. Newman (14-2, 3-0 Heartland) began its comeback when Tasha Cannon drained a jumper at the 15:27 mark, and sparked an 8-2 run, capped by a Satoria Bell free throw that tied the game at 10-10 with 11:53 to play. The Jets took their first lead of the game when a Sam Soyez free throw gave Newman a 15-14 lead near the 10-minute mark, and held the Rattlers without a point until the 6:14 mark, when Jackie Edward's converted an old-fashioned three-point play to pull St. Mary's back to within three, 20-17, with 6:14 remaining on the first-half clock. Newman pushed its lead to as many as seven inside the final three minutes, and held a 32-25 lead with 1:58 to play, but St. Mary's responded with five-straight points to pull within two, 32-30, at halftime.

Newman needed just under three minutes to regain a seven-point edge. Satoria Bell's three-pointer at the 17:12 mark gave the Jets a 39-32 lead. St. Mary's was never able to seriously threaten the Jets the rest of the way, allowing Newman to lead by at least five for the duration of the second half. The Jets took their largest lead of the game when Satoria Bell's free throw gave her squad a 65-55 lead with 21-seconds remaining, and Newman went on to the 66-59 win.

Satoria Bell led all scorers with 29 points in the contest. The senior guard added seven rebounds in the winning effort. Tasha Cannon posted her ninth double-double of the season with a 17-point, 17-rebound effort to round out Newman's double-digit scorers.

Jackie Edwards led the Rattlers with 21 points.

As a team, Newman shot 37.7 percent (23-61) and converted 66.7 percent (16-24) of its free throws. The Jets out-rebounded St. Mary's 48-39, and forced 15 Rattler turnovers.

With the win, Newman improves to 14-2 on the season, and 3-0 in Heartland Conference play. The Jets will return to action Thursday, traveling to Odessa, Texas to take on the Texas-Permian Basin Falcons. Tip-time is slated for 7:30 p.m. inside the Falcon Dome.
