Satoria Bell scored 26 points, and led the Newman women's basketball team to a 78-62 win over Texas-Permian Basin Thursday evening inside the Falcon Dome in Odessa, Texas. UTPB won the Heartland Conference Championship tournament last season, and represented the conference in the NCAA tournament.
Newman (15-2, 4-0 Heartland) was never seriously threatened in Thursday's contest. Senior
Celeste Key scored the first four points of the game, and sparked a 11-2 Newman run over the first three minutes of play. Texas-Permian Basin (11-6, 2-2 Heartland) countered with an 8-4 spurt, and pulled to within five, 15-10, by the 14:07 mark, but back-to-back three's from
Kianna Flannagan and Samantha Soyez sparked a 13-2 run, capped by an
Anna Sonka lay-up, that gave the Jets a 28-12 lead with 10:26 still to play. Newman took its first 20-point lead of the game after a
Satoria Bell jumper at the 4:55 mark that gave the Jets a 37-17 advantage, and the Newman cruised to halftime with a 42-25 lead.
UTPB opened the second half on a 10-4 run, and trimmed the Newman lead to 11 at the 16:10 mark, but over the next seven minutes, the Jets re-built their lead, taking a 23-point, 60-37 advantage after a Flannagan lay-up with 9:26 to play. It took until the seven-minute mark of the second half for three-pointers to start falling for the Falcons. UTPB drained four triples over the next four minutes, and pulled back to within nine, 71-62, with 3:34 to play, but Newman held the Falcons scoreless over the final three minutes, and ended the game on a 7-0 run en route to the 78-62 win.
Satoria Bell led all scorers in the contest, finishing with 26 points and five rebounds, while
Tasha Cannon added 14 points and finished one rebound shy of her 10th double-double of the season. Her nine rebounds was a game-high.
Kianna Flannagan and
Celeste Key rounded out Newman's double digit scorers, posting 12 points and 11 points, respectively.
Teisha King led the Falcons with 13 points.
As a team, Newman shot 55.6 percent (30-54) from the field, and 65.2 percent (15-23) from the free throw line. The Jets limited UTPB to a 34.3 percent (23-67) shooting effort, and out-rebounded the Falcons 44-33.
With the win, the Jets improve to 15-2 on the season, and remain unbeaten at 4-0 in Heartland Conference play. They will return to action Saturday, traveling to Austin, Texas, where they will take on the St. Edward's Hilltoppers. Tip-time is slated for 2:30 p.m. inside SEU's Recreation & Convocation Center.
