Alina Voronenko's career-high 15 points complemented 16-point outings from
Satoria Bell and
Tasha Cannon, and led Newman to a 64-52 win over St. Edward's Saturday afternoon at the Recreation and Convocation Center in Austin, Texas.
Newman (16-2, 5-0 Heartland) jumped out to an early 12-6 lead less than five mintues into the contest, only to watch St. Edward's (4-15, 1-4 Heartland) score four-straight points to cut its deficit to 12-10 at the 14-minute mark. The Hilltoppers continued to whittle away at Newman's lead, and eventually took a 21-20 lead for one possession. The Jets responded by holding SEU scoreless for the next six minutes, surrendering only a three-point basket by Brittany Ward, and built a 28-24 lead they took into the halftime locker room.
The Jets pushed their lead back to seven when
Alina Voronenko sunk a lay-up with 18:04 to play, giving Newman a 33-26 lead in the process. Three minutes later, the Hilltoppers had pulled back to within one, and remained within three points of the Jets until
Anna Sonka drained a trey with 13:00 to play, and sparked a 7-0 Newman run over the next five minutes that pushed the Jets to a 49-38 lead with 8:02 to play. Newman never led by less than seven from that point forward, and cruised to the 12-point, 64-52 win.
Tasha Cannon and
Satoria Bell each scored 16 points to lead the Jets. Cannon added four assists and four rebounds, while Bell snagged eight boards and blocked two Hilltopper shot attempts.
Alina Voronenko rounded out Newman's double-digit scorers, posting a career-high 15 points and eight rebounds.
Maddie Wheeler finished with 12 points to lead St. Edward's.
As a team, Newman shot 49.1 percent (26-35) from the field, and 68.8 percent (11-16) from the free throw line. Newman hit just one of its eight attempts from long range, but out-rebounded St. Edward's 39-26.
With the win, the Jets improves to 16-2 on the season, and 5-0 in Heartland Conference play. They will return to action Thursday, traveling to Goodwell, Okla., to take on the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies. Tip-time is slated for 7:30 p.m. inside Oscar Williams Fieldhouse.
