WICHITA - The Newman men's tennis team went 1-2 this weekend at the College Colorado Classic at Pueblo, Colo. The Jets defeated Colorado Christian 6-3 while losing to Metropolitan State Univ. of Denver 7-2 and Colorado Mesa 7-2.

Newman vs. Christian Colorado
Newman opened the weekend on Friday beginning with a 2-1 lead in dual match play after winnng two of its three matches in doubles competition. Junior Nei Dos Santos and Freddy Sanchez started things off with an 8-3 win over Colorado Christian's Flathers and Lego to give the Jets a 1-0 lead. Newman scored again in the next match when senior Ramon Nola and sophomore Jeff Wherritt beat Dillon Ether and Taylor Bryan, 8-0 giving the Jets a 2-0 advantage. Christian Colorado fought back in the final doubles match when Alex Siemers and Matt Gibbs handed senior Mark Riedl and sophomore Mitchel Whitmer an 8-4 loss headed into singles play.

Dos Santos started off singles play with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Flathers to put the Jets ahead 3-1. Sanchez scored another point for Newman with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Etter. The Jets followed with a 6-1, 6-0 victory from Nola. Siemers responded for Colorado Christian with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Wherritt to bring the dual match score to 5-2. Newman earned another point from Whitmer's 6-4, 6-2 win over Lego, but Colorado Christian controlled the last match beating Mark Riedl 6-1, 6-1.

The Jets finished the match against Colorado Christian 6-3.

Newman vs. Metro State of Denver
Once again, Newman started off 2-1 after doubles competition against Metro State on Saturday morning. Dos Santos and Sanchez beat Gabriel Vlahos and Adrien Delvaux 8-3 while Nola and Wherritt squeaked by Jonathan Evangelista and Ryan Joyce 9-7. Metro State's Alex Parmenter and John Qualls beat Whitmer and Mark Riedl 8-2 finishing doubles action.

Metro State took the reins during singles competition winning all six matches. Dos Santosand Nola did not give Metro State any slack as they both took their opponents to a third match. Metro State won the match against Newman, 7-2.

Newman vs. Colorado Mesa
In the third and final dual of the weekend, Newman continued its dominane from Santos, Sanchez and Nola, Wherritt in doubles competition. The doubles action was exciting as Santos and Sanchez beat Jordan Lyden and Andres Hernandez 8-5, Nola and Wherritt with an 8-5 win over Trevor Brown and Taylor Macres and Whitmer and Mark Riedl fought hard against John Hendrickson and Brason Hollabaugh losing 8-4.

The Jets began singles competition with a 2-1 lead, but Colorado Mesa took the rest of the matches beating Newman 7-2.

The 1-2 weekend concluded the Fall season for the men's tennis team.
