Hornets Force Jets to First Season Loss

Box Score WICHITA - Newman women's basketball team traveled north to Emporia State on Tuesday evening. Seniors Kianna Flannagan and Anna Sonka led the Jets in the first loss of the season to the #19 team in NCAA Div. II. The Jets competed well in the 77-66 loss.

The Jets came out blazing as Sonka scored the first goal of the night with a three-pointer, assisted by Cheniqwa Banks. The hot shooting continued with seven more Newman points. At the 15th minute mark, the Jets led 10-6. After the first media timeout, the Hornets slowly started taking the reins. An offensive rebound followed by a layup from Emporia State's Merissa Quick started the 11-2 run for the Hornets. Newman kept steady finishing the half behind the Hornets, 44-31.

Newman finished two points better than Emporia in the second half, but the 13 point lead at half proved to be the benefactor for the Hornets. The difference for the Jets in the second half was the points off the bench. The lady Jets increased the bench points from seven in the first half to 22 points the second half. Newman only produced two turnovers in the second half which forced Emporia State into zero points off turnovers; the Hornets were allotted 11 points off turnovers in the first half.

Although the Jets held the Hornets in the second half, the outcome was still in favor of Emporia State (77-66). Flannagan finished with 17 points, five rebounds and two assists. Sonka scored 12 points with two assists and four rebounds; Chynna Ramelb right behind Sonka with 11 points.

“We competed in spurts tonight, which is encouraging. Playing on the floor of #19 in the country, you have to be ready for 40 minutes. I see thing we can build on and this team isn't that far away from being good. It was a big test for us, we just came up a little short,” stated Coach Darin Spence on the performance at Emporia State.

With the loss, the Jets move to an 1-1 record. The ladies travel to Missouri Southern State in Joplin, Mo. for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off time.
