Womens B-ball Season Opener - Sat. at Rockhurst

WICHITA - The Newman women's basketball team travels for its season opener against Rockhurst in Kansas City, Mo. on Saturday, Nov. 10 with a start time of 6 p.m. The Jets have three returners, Kianna Flannagan, Anna Sonka and Sumayyah Muhammad that will be looked upon for leadership in the first-season with Coach Darin Spence.

“We are excited to get the season going with all our new faces and see how we grow together. We have put in quality work early, now it's time to take it to a game situation and see who shows up,” said Head Coach Spence.

After coming off a successful season winning the 2011-12 Heartland Conference Championship, the new team anticipates continuing the success. The ladies will be challenged in the beginning of the season due to traveling for the first six games.

“We know we have a long way to go, so we view all our non-conference games as tests to prepare us for Heartland Conference play. This group will surprise people and we will focus on daily improvement and working to be in a position to compete for a third consecutive Heartland
Conference Championship,” said Spence.

Rockhurst's Hawks have already taken on UMKC this season where they lost 45-62. More recently however, the Hawks were able to record its first exhibition win of the season against Avila with a narrow 49-43 victory.

Following the Jets first test against Rockhurst, the team will then travel to Emporia State on Tuesday Nov. 13 where they will tip-off against the Hornets at 7 p.m.
