About the Jets...
Newman (17-5, 6-2 Heartland) will try and end its three-game losing streak Saturday, traveling to Laredo, Texas to face Texas A&M International. The Jets, who have now lost two-straight Heartland Conference match-ups after going undefeated throught the first half of Heartland Conference play, need a win to keep pace with conference-leader Texas-Permian Basin.

Seniors Satoria Bell and Tasha Cannon lead the Jets offensively and are one of the most productive scoring tandems in Div. II women's college basketball. Bell, who has scored 526 points this season is the leading scorer in NCAA Div. II women's basketball. She is averaging 23.9 points and 6.3 boards per game and has been named the Heartland Conference Player of the Week eight times. Cannon, meanwhile, has notched 11 double-doubles this season and is averaging 16.3 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. She has earned Heartland Conference Player of the Week honors three times this season.


Each of Newman's five losses this season have come on the road. Thursday's 74-66 loss to St. Mary's was the second Heartland Conference loss for the Jets and the third-straight loss overall.

Newman is scoring 73.3 points per game this season, and is out-scoring its opposition by 11.3 points per game. From the free throw line, the Jets have converted 71.9 percent of their attempts while shooting 44.9 percent from the field.

Scouting Texas A&M International...
The Dustdevils (11-12, 3-6 Heartland) storm into Saturday's matchup off an 89-86 overtime loss to conference foe Oklahoma Panhandle State Thursday night on their home floor in Laredo.  TAMIU's Amanda Mangan led all scorers with a career-high 30 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. The Dustdevils' Linda Banuelos, Nikkiti Scott and Samantha Chacon also notched double digit scoring efforts.
TAMIU is in fifth place in the Heartland Conference standings, and are in a must-win position if it is to reach the conference tournament. The Dustdevils are making 40.2 percent of their shots from the field this season while dropping in 64.7 percent of their free throws. TAMIU is holding its opposition to 74.2 points and 43.2 rebounds per game, and s 5-6 on its home floor this season. The Dustdevils have gone 3-1 all-time against Newman in games played in Laredo.

Last Time Out...
The Jets dropped their third-straight game, 74-66, to St. Mary's in an overtime battle in San Antonio, Texas. The loss was the fifth road loss for Newman this season.

Newman started the game down 3-0 but took the lead, 4-3 off a pair of layups from Satoria Bell and Tasha Cannon less than a minute into play. The teams traded baskets until the 12:36 mark when Kianna Flannagan sparked a six-point run that gave Newman a 19-13 lead with 7:57 remaining in the first half. St. Mary's rallied and tied the game 25-25 headed into halftime.

The teams when back-and-forth until the 12:36 mark when Kianna Flannagan helped ignite another Newman six-point run that gave the Jets a 47-41 lead with 10:23 left to play. The Rattlers fought back, trading baskets with the Jets until they had tied the game, 59-59 wtih 56 seconds left to play. Both teams missed game winning shots in the last minute and match went to overtime tied 59-59.

St. Mary's took control in extra time and opened up a 69-61 lead midway though the period. The Jets fought back, using a Cannon layup with 45 seconds to play to cut the lead to 70-66, but the Rattlers shut the door on the Jets and closed the game on a four-point run to claim the 74-66 win.

Three Newman players reached double digit scoring totals against the Rattlers. Satoria Bell led the Jets with 20 points and six rebounds while Tasha Cannon dropped in 19 points and grabbed seven boards. Kianna Flannagan added 11 points and four rebounds in the loss. As a team, the Jets shot 43.6 percent (24-55) from the field and drained 64.0 percent (16-25) of their shots from the charity stripe. Newman was out-rebounded by the Rattlers, 40-32 and turned the ball over 23 times in the contest.

Player to Watch...
Samantha Soyez- The 5-10 forward from Wichita, Kan. has started every game for the Jets this season. In her last meeting with the Dustdevils, Soyez scored a season high 15 points in Newman's 88-81 victory Jan. 12 inside Fugate Gymnasium. Soyez is shooting 36.4 percent (36-99) from the field this season and is making 75.7 percent (28-37) of her shots from the free throw line.
