Last Time Out...
The Jets beat Texas-Permian Basin for their 11th-straight win inside Fugate Gymnasium and their ninth Heartland Conference victory of the season. Satoria Bell led all scorers with 32 points.
First Half Notes:
-The teams traded baskets until the 15:24 mark when an Ellen Traylor jumper sparked a 7-0 run giving Newman a 18-8 lead with 13:06 to play.
-The Falcons responded with a pair of Tammy Acosta free throws to cut the lead to 23-17 halfway through the first half.
-Newman returned fire, using a Satoria Bell steal followed by a pair a free throws to push the lead to 33-22 with 7:03 remaining in the half.
-UTPB wouldn't quit though and over the next four minutes whittled the lead down to 35-34.
-The Jets tired to hold them off but with 0:28 left in the half the Falcons had taken a 38-37 lead.
-Newman's Satoria Bell fought back and dropped in a layup with 0:03 left on the clock to grab a 39-38 lead going into the half.
Second Half Notes:
-Tasha Cannon opened the second half for the Jets with a jumper to push the lead to 41-38 but by the 14:28 mark the teams were tied at 45-45.
-The teams traded baskets until UTPB's Jessi Cowden drained a three pointer with 6:34 remaining to give the Falcons a 64-56 lead.
-The Jets' Kianna Flannagan responded, hitting a jumper with 5:01 left on the clock to set-off a 8-0 run and cut the lead to 66-65 with 1:39 remaining.
-Newman tied the game at 67-67 off a Bell layup with 1:04 left to play and used a Alina Voronenko layup with 0:09 to go in regulation to grab a 69-67 lead and hold off the Falcons for the win.
Satoria Bell scored a game-high 32 points and pulled down three boards in the contest. As a team, Newman shot 50.0 percent (28-56) from the field and 76.9 percent (10-13) from the charity stripe.
A Peak At the Heartland Conference Tournament...
Newman (9-2 HC), Arkansas-Fort Smith (9-3 HC), Texas-Permian Basin (8-3 HC), and St. Mary's (7-4 HC) have all clinched spots in the Heartland Conference Tournament. No. 5 Texas A&M International (3-8 HC) has one regular-season game remaining, and has been mathematically eliminated from contention.
