Last Time Out...
The Jets ran into a determined Arkansas-Fort Smith squad Thursday night in Fort Smith, Ark., and suffered their first Heartland Conference loss in an 83-69 decision to the Lions. The loss ended Newman's 11-game win streak and was its third road loss of the season.
UAFS scored the first points of the game with a Coby Hill layup but fell behind when Newman's Sam Soyez hit a three point shot to put the Jets ahead 7-4 two minutes into the first half. That would prove to be the last lead of the game for Newman as the Lions responed with an eight-point run to take a 12-7 advantage. The Jets tried to battle back but by the end of the first half Fort Smith had opened up a 14-point lead, 47-33.
The Lions opened the second half by pushing their lead to 51-33 before Newman's Satoria Bell dropped in a layup to kick-start a 10-point Newman run, bringing the Jets as close as 51-43, but that was as close as they would come. UAFS pushed the lead to as many as 17-points before claiming an 83-69 victory inside the Stubblefield Center.
Tasha Cannon and Satoria Bell combined for 52 points but it wasn't enough to salvage a win. Cannon had a game-high 29 points and pulled down nine boards while Bell dumped in 23 points and snatched six rebounds. As a team the Jets shot 42.0 percent (21-50) from the field and sunk 80.6 percent (25-31) of their free throws but were out-rebounded by the Lions 36-32.
Player to Watch...
Tasha Cannon- The senior-transfer from Atlantic City, N.J. has been a crucial component to the Jets both offensively and defensively. She has notched 10 double-doubles and has scored in double-digits in 19 of Newman's 20 games this season. Cannon is averaging 16.2 points and 10.0 boards per game and is making 75.7 percent of her shots from the charity stripe.
