Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Newman women's basketball team dropped its third straight road game and second consecutive conference matchup Thursday evening in an overtime slugfest with St. Mary's.
Satoria Bell led the Jets with 20 points in the loss.
Jackie Edwards drained a three pointer just 10 seconds into the game to give St. Mary's (11-14, 6-3 Heartland) an early lead but Newman's
Tasha Cannon and
Satoria Bell answered with a pair of layups to give the Jets a one point edge. After trading baskets until the 12:36 mark, the Jets broke a 13-13 tie and went on a six-point run to grab a 19-13 lead with 7:57 remaining. St. Mary's wasn't going to go away, though, and used a Kathryn Galindo layup to cut the lead to 21-17. Newman's
Satoria Bell pushed the lead back to 23-17, after being fouled by Amber Sophus and going two-for-two from the charity stripe. The Rattlers weren't going to allow Newman to open up a comfortable lead, and took advantage of six Newman turnovers in the last five mintues of the first half to tie the game at 25-25 going into halftime.
St. Mary's opened the second half with a Morgan Pullins jumper to take a 27-25 lead just 26 seconds in, but Newman's
Tasha Cannon evened things back up with a bucket of her own. Both teams traded baskets until the 12:56 mark when
Kianna Flannagan sparked a six-point Newman run that pushed the Jets' lead to 47-41with 10:23 left to play. The Rattlers responded though, slowing drawing closer as they traded baskets with the Jets and eventually tied the game for the 11th time, 59-59 with only 56 seconds left on the clock. Both teams missed potential game-winning baskets in the last minute and game moved to an overtime period.
The Rattlers buried two three-pointers to start the overtime period and opened up a 69-61 lead halfway though extra time. The Jets tried to recover, using a layup from
Tasha Cannon to cut the lead to 70-66 with 45 seconds left to play, but that was the last time they would score as the Rattlers closed the game on a four-point run, and picked up the 74-66 win.
Newman had three players score in double digits.
Satoria Bell led the Jets with 20 points and six rebounds while
Tasha Cannon scored 19 points and pulled down seven boards.
Kianna Flannagan added 11 points and four rebounds.
As a team, Newman shot 43.6 percent (24-55) from the field and 64 percent (16-25) from the charity stripe. The Jets were out-rebounded, 40-32 by the Rattlers and turned the ball over 23 times in the contest.
St. Mary's also had three players score in double digits. They were led by DeAnna Patterson's game-high 22 points.
With the loss Newman falls to 17-5 on the season and 6-2 in Heartland Conference play. The Jets return to action Saturday when they conclude their four day road trip with a conference matchup against Texas A&M International in Laredo, Texas. Tip-time is scheduled for 12 p.m. inside the Dustdevils' Kinesiology Building.
