About the Jets...
The Jets will come to play after beating Arkansas-Fort Smith in the 2012 women's basketball Heartland Conference championship game Saturday afternoon inside Fugate Gymnasium. With the win Newman earned its first-ever bid into the NCAA Div. II National Championship tournament. In that contest Satoria Bell led all scorers with 23 points which was on par with her season average of 23.2 points per game. Newman relies heavily on the play of seniors Bell and Tasha Cannon who have earned a combined 13 Heartland Conference Player of the Week awards this season. Cannon is averagaing nearly a double-double with 16.1 points and 9.4 boards per game and has recorded 13 double-doubles this season. Bell finished the season as the second leading scorer in NCAA Div. II women's college basketball with 649 points. She has scored in double digits in every game this season including five contests with over 30 points. Newman enters the tournament as the No. 7 seed in the South Central Region.

Scouting NSU...
The Riverhawks (24-4) enter competition off a 68-51 win over Arkansas-Fort Smith Feb. 27 in Tahlequah, Okla. Taylor Lewis led NSU with a game high 30 points against the Lions. The Riverhawks are 8-3 away from Jack Dobbins Field House and 5-0 at neutral sites this season. NSU is the No. 2 seed in the South Central Region.

Last Time Out...
The Jets beat Arkansas-Fort Smith, 66-62 in the championship game of the 2012 Heartland Conference women's basketball tournament Saturday afternoon inside Fugate Gymnasium. With  the win Newman earned its first-ever bid into the NCAA Div. II National Championship tournament.

First Half Notes:
- UAFS held Newman without a field goal for the first seven minutes of play, taking a 9-2 lead until Satoria Bell hit a jumper to spark an 8-0 run and give the Jets a 10-9 lead with 10:47 left in the first half.
- The Lions regained the lead on the next bucket but a pair of Celeste Key free throws helped Newman hold the lead into the final minutes of the half.
- UAFS tied the game at 15-15 with 8:00 to play but a pair of Kianna Flannagan free throws sparked a six-point Newman run to give them a 21-15 advantage with 5:22 remaining in the half.
- The Lions responded and used a seven-point run to retake the lead, 24-21 with 2:49 to go.
- The Jets trailed the remainder of the half and headed into halftime down 26-25.

Second Half Notes:
- Tasha Cannon opened the second half with a pair of free throws to give the Jets the lead once again, 27-26.
- The Lions scored to take a short-lived 28-27 lead but Newman kept them from scoring for nearly five minutes and opened up a 33-28 lead after a Satoria Bell three-pointer with 16:17 left in the game.
- The Jets pushed their lead to as much a 55-40 off another Bell basket but a Coby Hill bucket sparked a 12-2 Lion run and closed the gap to 57-52 with 2:50 left to play.
- Newman scored four quick points, widening the gap to 61-52 with 1:38 to go but UAFS responded with back-to-back threes to cut the lead to 61-60 with 19 seconds left on the clock.
- The Jets closed the game out with a Cannon jumper followed by a Key free throw to seal the 66-62 win.


Satoria Bell led all scorers with 23 points, and added six rebounds in the winning effort. Tasha Cannon posted her second-straight 16-point outing, while Kianna Flannagan finished with 15 points and six assists.

As a team, Newman shot 33.3 percent (17-51) from the field and drained 28 of its 31 free throw attempts.
