WICHITA - A late rally led the Newman women's tennis team to a 6-3 win over in-state rival Fort Hays State Friday afternoon at Riverside Tennis Center. The Jets won five of the six singles courts to secure the win.

Fort Hays State opened the match by claiming wins in two of the three doubles matches, and took a 2-1 lead into singles play. Newman's only win came on the No. 2 doubles court when Courtney Dold and Hillary Hicks knocked off FHSU's Camile Caron-Bedard and Laura Johnson in an 8-2 decision.

Newman did its work on the singles courts. After watching FHSU take a 3-1 lead with a win on the No. 3 courts, the Jets began their rally when Kirstie Symon knocked off Caron-Bedard in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Hillary Hicks tied the match at 3-3 with a third-set win over FHSU's Brittney Ricci, 1-6, 7-6 (2), 10-0.

The Jets swept the final three singles matches. Courtney Dold cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 win over Melissa Skovira in the No. 4 singles match, while Carissa Villaflor knocked off Laura Johnson in a 6-3, 6-4 decision. Emily Gerber put the nail in the FHSU coffin with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Brianna Watkins on the No. 6 court.

With the win, the Jets improve to 13-7 on the season. They will return to action Wednesday, hosting Emporia State on senior day. First serve is slated for 2;30 p.m. at Riverside Tennis Center.
