WICHITA - The Newman men's tennis team closed its regular season on a high note with a 6-3 win over Emporia State Wednesday afternoon at Riverside Tennis Center. The Jets swept the doubles competition to fuel the win.

Jared Ferris and Jeff Wherritt opened doubles play with an 8-5 win over Emporia State's Christian Lollar and Shane Hollern on the No. 3 court. Igor Ozegovic and Kevin Klein followed with an 8-6 win over ESU's Andrew Davids and Matt Edwards, and Chris Copenhaver and Evgeniy Kim completed the sweep with a 9-9 win over ESU's Mitch Kibbe and Matt Van Horn in the No. 2 match to give the Jets a 3-0 lead in the match heading into singles play.

Ozegovic kept the Jets in the air, opening singles play with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Davids on the No. 1 court, and put Newman within a point of clinching the match.

Emporia State responded with wins on the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 courts, and pulled to within one court of tying the match, but Ferris used three sets to defeat Lollar on the No. 5 court, 6-3, 1-6, 10-7, to secure the Newman win.

With the match already decided, Jeff Wherritt knocked off Shane Hollern in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

With the win, the Jets improve to 7-11 on the season. They will return to action Friday, opening play in the Heartland Conference Men's Tennis Championship in Austin, Texas.
