TULSA, Okla. - A long and challenging road continued for the Newman women's tennis team, which dropped three matches over the weekend in Tulsa, Okla. The Jets were swept by Heartland Conference foe Dallas Baptist and non-conference rival Northwest Missouri State, before dropping an 8-1 decision to Arkansas-Fort Smith.
#32 Dallas Baptist 9, Newman 0 (March 30, 2012)
Newman's No. 1 doubles tandem of
Kirstie Symon and
Carissa Villaflor got their first taste of regionally-ranked competition for the weekend in its opening match against a DBU duo of Natalie Gennissen and Hannah Innes, who entered the match ranked No. 5 in the South Central Region. The Patriots proved to be too much to handle, and picked up an 8-3 win. DBU won the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles courts by the same 8-3 margin, and took a 3-0 lead in the match.
Symon squared off against Gennissen once again in singles play. This time, Symon gave the sophomore, who entered the match ranked No. 12 in the region, all she watned, but dropped a third-set tie-breaker, 4-6, 6-4, 10-4.
Hillary Hicks and
Carissa Villaflor each took their Patriot opponents to a third set, but all fell short. Hicks lost to Leah Rutt (3-6, 6-3, 12-10), while Villaflor lost to Leah Smith, 7-5, 4-6, 10-5.
Northwest Missouri State 5, Newman 0 (March 31, 2012)
Newman dug itself in an early hole after a doubles sweep, and couldn't rebound in a shortened singles competition.
Hillary Hicks and
Emily Gerber were the only Jets to complete their matches in the dual, and both dropped decisions to their Bearcat opponents. Hicks fell to Erika Leston in straight sets (6-1, 6-0), while Gerber dropped a 6-0, 6-3 contest to Leslee Feldhaus.
Arkansas-Fort Smith 8, Newman 1 (March 31, 2012)
Newman's only court win of the weekend came in an 8-1 loss to Arkansas-Fort Smith Saturday afternoon.
Kirstie Symon was awarded the victory on the No. 1 singles court when her opponent, Monica Pieratt, retired due to injury. The Lions swept the remaining courts, however, and cruised to the 8-1 win.
The Jets will look to return to their winning ways Tuesday, traveling to North Newton, Kan., to take on the Bethel Threshers.
