Box Score Wichita - The Newman women's basketball fell in overtime, 68-58, against St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 12) at Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets had a strong start, leading 28-17 at halftime, but St. Mary's rallied for the win. St. Mary's upped its record to 12-3 and 5-0 in the Heartland Conference, while Newman dropped to 5-10 and 0-3 in conference.
Strong defense propelled Newman to the first half lead. The Jets held St. Mary's to 5-of-32 from the field in the first 20 minutes for a 15.6 percent shooting. Newman shot 41.7 percent in the first half on 10-of24 shooting to take the 28-17 halftime lead.
The Jets pushed the lead to 14 points in the second half at 35-21 on a 3-pointer by
Bobbi Coleman with 14:31 to go in the game, but the Rattlers responded with a 15-2 run to make it a 37-36 score with 9:45 left. With the score tied at 39-39,
Cheniqwa Banks made a jumper to put NU up 41-39 at the 3:45 mark. St. Mary's took back the lead with a 3-pointer by Jackie Woods. A lay-up with 1:32 left pushed the Rattlers' margin to 44-41.
The Rattlers led by five points, 46-41 after two made free throws by Mariah Lee. The Jets made a charge to force overtime.
Shade John started the run with a layup with 34 seconds remaining. St. Mary's only made one of two free throws on its next possession. Two
Bobbi Coleman free throws with 20 seconds left made it 47-45.
On next possession, the Jets were forced to foul, and Lia Kioa made the first attempt, but missed the second. Kioa gathered the offensive rebound on her own miss, and the Jets were forced to foul. The Rattlers went 1-2 from the line with 9 seconds remaining to take a 49-45 lead.
Bobbi Coleman hit two free throws with 8 seconds remaining to cut the lead in half at 49-47. With 5 seconds left, Liz Boyd of St. Mary's missed both free throws, and the Jets rebounded. A foul with 1 second remaining put
Bobbi Coleman at the line once again. She made both free throws to tie the game at 49-49 with 1 second remaining.
The overtime was all St. Mary's as the Rattlers outscored Newman 19-9 in the five minute OT to take the win.
Alexandra Ciabattoni led the Jets with 14 points and missed out on a double-double by one as she totaled nine rebounds.
Cheniqwa Banks added 13 points and eight rebounds, and
Bobbi Coleman hit double figures with 11 points.
Shade John led NU with four assists.
Morgan Pullins of St. Mary's pulled down 19 rebounds and scored 12 points for a double-double. Felicia Jacobs of St. Mary's also had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
The Jets take to the road for three straight games, starting next weekend with a trip to Oklahoma Panhandle State on Thursday (Jan. 17) in Goodwell, Okla. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
