Lady Lions Strong Second Half Downs Lady Jets, 75-59

Box Score FORT SMITH, Ark. – The Newman women's basketball team fell to Arkansas-Fort Smith, 75-59, on Saturday (Jan. 26) at the Stubblefield Center. With the score tied at 29-29 at halftime, the Lady Lions outscored the Lady Jets, 46-30, in the second half. Newman falls to 6-12 and 1-5 in the Heartland Conference.
 
With the game tied at 29-29, the Lady Lions used an 11-2 run to take a 40-31 lead at the 17:34 mark of the second half. NU only could get as close as seven points midway through the second half. Chynna Ramelb's two free throws made it 54-47 with 9:48, but the Lady Jets could not cut into the lead any more than that. The Lady Lions pushed to the final 75-59 score.
 
A close first half saw the Lady Jets take an 8-6 lead at the 12:11 mark on a jumper from Alexandra Ciabattoni. UAFS made a run to take a 20-12 advantage, but the Lady Jets battled back to tie the game at 29-29 at halftime. Tyahnna Higgs scored on a layup with 2 seconds left to tie the score.
 
Three Jets scored in double figures with Alexandra Ciabattoni totaling a game-high 17 points. Kianna Flannagan scored 12 points and Bobbi Coleman added 11 points. Ciabattoni pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. NU went 20-of-62 from the field (32.3 percent) and 2-of-16 (12.5 percent) from behind the 3-point line.
 
UAFS was led by Angi Ramey's double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds. The Lady Lions shot 45.5 percent (30-66) from the field and 43.8 percent (7-16) from 3-point range.
 
Newman returns home for one game next week as the Lady Jets welcome Oklahoma Christian to Fugate Gymnasium on Thursday (Jan. 31) for a 5:30 p.m. game.
