Lady Jets Upset Bid Falls Short Against No. 5 ESU

Box Score WICHITA – The Newman women's basketball team's upset bid against No. 5 Emporia State fell short, 68-59, on Thursday (Nov. 14) at Fugate Gymnasium. The Lady Jets dropped to 1-2 on the season, while ESU improved to 4-0.
 
With 5:21 left in the second half, the Lady Jets trailed by only one after a Shakira Raynor free throw to make it 50-49. Raynor had a chance to tie the score at 50-50, but her second free throw was no good.
 
After the free throws, ESU had a four-point possession, as the Hornets made two free throws after a Lady Jet technical foul and then got a layup at the 5:07 mark to go up 54-49.
 
After an empty NU possession, the Hornets pushed the advantage to seven points, 56-49, with two free throws with 4:21 remaining.
 
Cheniqwa Banks kept the Lady Jets in the game with a 3-point basket with 3:30 left to close NU to within four at 56-52 with 3:30 left.
 
With the deficit still four at 58-54, ESU got back-to-back offensive rebounds and capitalized with a jumper at the 1:34 mark to take a 60-54 lead. The Hornets put the game away with made free throws in the final two minutes for the 68-59 final score.
 
Four Lady Jets were in double figures. Alexandra Ciabattoni, Cheniqwa Banks and Shakeira Copeland all totaled 12 points, and Cierra Tjaden added 10 points. Tjaden tallied a team-high eight rebounds, and Raynor dished out a game-high seven assists.
 
The Hornets were led by Laura Patrick who totaled a double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds, both game highs. Kionna Kellog added 16 points.
 
NU starts Heartland Conference play on Nov. 21 at Texas-Permian Basin in Odessa, Texas, and then the Lady Jets go to Lubbock Christian on Saturday (Nov. 23) for a 1 p.m. game in Lubbock, Texas.
