Box Score HAYS, Kan. – The Newman women's basketball team fell behind 63-33 at halftime and couldn't recover, falling 114-86 to Fort Hays State on Tuesday (Nov. 26) at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Lady Jets fell to 2-4 on the season, and FHSU went to 4-0.
The Tigers shot 71.9 percent (23-32) in the first half as they scored 63 points. FHSU also hit 13 free throws and went 4-of-6 from 3-point range.
In the first half, the Lady Jets shot 42.9 percent (15-35), but went just 1-for-5 from the free throw line.
NU outscored the Tigers in the second half, 53-51, but the 30-point halftime deficit was too much to overcome. The Jets shot 65.6 percent (21-32) from the field in the second half and an impressive 8-of-11 from 3-point distance.
FHSU scored its 51 second half points on 17-of-36 shooting (47.2 percent). The Tigers totaled 14 free throws made in the second half.
Both teams finished better than 50 percent from the field. FHSU shot 58.8 percent (40-68), and NU shot 53.7 percent (36-67), including 62.5 percent (10-16) from 3.
The Tigers held a 27 to four advantage in free throw made. FHSU went 27-of-36 from the line, and NU went 4-of-11. The Lady Jets totaled 32 fouls to 16 from the Tigers.
Alexandra Ciabattoni scored a game-high 28 points. Shakeira Copeland added 12 points, and
Cheniqwa Banks tallied 11 points.
Six Tigers hit double figures in points. Kate Lehman (17 points, 14 rebounds) and Kate Edwards (18 points, 10 rebounds) each had double-doubles.
The Lady Jets return home on Saturday (Nov. 30) for a 2 p.m. game against Northern New Mexico at Fugate Gymnasium.
