Cierra Tjaden hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 55 seconds remaining to put Newman women's basketball up 74-73, as the Lady Jets pulled out a 76-73 victory at Rogers State on Monday (Dec. 2) at the Claremore Expo Center. NU improved to 2-1 in the Heartland Conference and 4-4 overall.
After the Lady Jets took the one-point lead, the NU defense got a stop, forcing the Hillcats into a missed 3-point shot.
Chynna Ramelb pulled down the rebound with 31 seconds left, and RSU elected to foul Tjaden with 12 seconds left. The freshman from Waverly, Neb. knocked down both free throws to put the Lady Jets up 76-73. NU's defense once again held RSU scoreless in its final possession to get the 76-73 victory.
Senior forward Shakeira Copeland scored a team-high 20 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field. She added a team-high five rebounds.
Cheniqwa Banks totaled 15 points, including three 3-pointers. The senior guard also had four rebounds. Tjaden scored 13 points, and she dished out a team-high six assists.
The Lady Jets shot an impressive 60 percent (30-50) from the field, including 50 percent (7-14) from 3-point range.
RSU's Clarissa Cannon scored a game-high 29 points, and Kami Bunch tallied 14 assists. Both were single-game school records for the Hillcats.
NU returns home for two Heartland Conference games. The Lady Jets take on Texas A&M International on Thursday (Dec. 5) at 7 p.m. St. Mary's travels to Wichita on Saturday (Dec. 7) for a 1 p.m. contest.
